What 9K gold is worth and how dealers price it
9K is 37.5% gold and is the most common karat in the UK and Ireland. With more alloy than gold it is durable and affordable, but its melt value per gram is well under half the spot price.
Look for the hallmark 375 or 9K. 9K is typical of British and Irish everyday jewellery. 9K often has a paler colour and can tarnish slightly; neither affects melt value, which depends only on weight and fineness.
Dealers weigh the piece, deduct stones and non-gold parts, and multiply the net weight by 0.375 to get the fine gold content. They then multiply by the GBP spot price per gram and apply their payout percentage — usually 60–75% of melt at shops and pawnbrokers, 80–90% at specialist buyers.
Worked example: a 20 g bag of 9K rings and earrings holds 7.50 g of fine gold. Enter 20 g and 9K in the calculator above to see its live melt value in GBP. For small 9K lots, fixed handling fees hurt most — compare the net offer, not the advertised percentage.
In the UK, gold dealers must be registered for anti-money-laundering supervision and check ID. Hallmarks are enforced by the Assay Offices in London, Birmingham, Sheffield and Edinburgh, which makes British marks among the most reliable.
